Among the 3100 homeless individuals in Austin, Texas, 70% of those that are homeless are unable to find temporary shelters for themselves. Being disabled, suffering from mental health conditions caused by trauma and abuse and inability to find housing because of familial conditions are among some of the reasons preventing them from finding somewhere they can stay. In this episode, we talk with Jo Kathrynn Quinn from Caritas of Austin about ending homelessness, and providing basic human needs for the 57 years in the city.
Prevent and End Homelessness in Austin
Homelessness is a traumatic experience for everyone. Being unable to protect oneself and their belongings can be very challenging for mental health. Living in a constant state of alert just to keep safe is not good for one’s well being, on top of having to worry where your next meal will come from, and having your hygiene fall by the wayside. As of 2021, estimates run at around 2238 individuals living unsheltered, and staying in places that are not meant for human habitation. Quinn explains that Caritas has also worked to meet basic human needs in Austin; in recent years, homelessness has been so prevalent that Caritas has been working to provide shelter and help make the experience of homelessness brief & non-recurring for most individuals.
