Statistics from the International Labor Organization found say there are 14.3 million enslaved people in the world. The goal of Free The Slaves is to free enslaved people and eliminate the conditions that enable the modern slave trade to exist. In today's episode, we talked with Bukeni Warusi, Executive Director of Free The Slaves.
Many believe that slavery ended in the 18th century with the emancipation proclamation and the Union victory. But modern slavery still exists, in a different form and shape. There are millions of Africans that aren't born free. Modern slavery takes on a new shape. It promises economic opportunities and a better life, only to end up enslaving thousands of Africans. Racial inequality is another factor that leads people into slavery. Throughout African American history, we've seen how former slaves still end up being enslaved. Poverty is a big reason why people end up in slavery.
The Face of Modern-Day Slavery
Free The Slaves is present in 27 countries. The list includes the United States, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Haiti, DR Congo, Ghana, Senegal, India, Vietnam, and more. Bukeni says that modern slavery is the cause of many things. In DR Congo, modern slavery started when the civil war began. Fugitive slaves are trying to escape these countries, but end up victims of human trafficking. Through their Global Strategic Plan, the organization hopes to free slaves and oppressed into living a free life.
Free The Slaves targets populations living in poverty of marginalized communities. The black population in these communities is far from free. They are targets of militias and force them into slave work. Bukeni says this is one example of how modern slavery works. By ending the conditions that allow modern slavery and modern slave states to exist, they hope to free African Americans and the black population.
While Northern states abolished slavery in the 18th century with the emancipation proclamation, modern slavery still exists. Free The Slaves wants to see freed slaves live a better life.
