Despite being a popular recreation destination, Galveston Bay lacks the clear waters of many other bays. The water is muddy, and the bay requires restoration work. Over the years, many habitats around the bay were lost. From coastal to oyster reefs, these habits are at risk of becoming extinct. In today's episode, we talked with Bob Stokes, President of Galveston Bay Foundation.
Galveston Bay Foundation is a conservation nonprofit organization that looks after the Galveston Bay. They have been looking after the bay for 35 years and offer multiple solutions on how to preserve the bay for generations to come.
Fighting For A Healthy Galveston Bay
Bob says that a healthy Galveston is one where all community members are satisfied. From recreational users to commercial users, Galveston Bay Foundation works with each community member and discusses solutions that will benefit all. But most importantly, the aim is to preserve the natural resources, beauty, and commercial effectiveness of Galveston.
With these objectives in mind, Galveston Bay Foundation wants to turn Galveston into a healthy and productive place. To this day, Galveston Bay remains a serious risk. Over the years, the bay has lost 80,000 acres of freshwater wetlands and 8,000 acres of saltwater wetlands.
