Donors throughout the world are keen to ensure developing countries have access to clean water. But some charities merely offer a band-aid solution. In this episode we talked with Rich Klopp from Water for Good about securing the long-term health of water infrastructure in the Central African Republic.
What Is the Problem Facing the Central African Republic?
The Central African Republic is a small, landlocked former French colony. Since decolonization, it has been plagued by political instability. This has prevented clean water from reaching the people who need it most.
Water for Good is a water implementer; they are some of the boots on the ground that maintain the country’s water infrastructure. The average mechanical water pump in sub-Saharan Africa breaks after only 18 months, so this maintenance work is of vital importance.
Unlike other organizations, Water for Good are not outsiders; their founder grew up in C.A.R and works closely with private and public sector organizations to promote local ownership of the water supply.
Rich explains that the real work begins after water pumps have been installed. As donors, we should focus less on initial access to water and more on the complex issue of sustainability. The average Central African cares much more about the long-term health of their child than having fresh water for 18 months.
