Haiti paid its debt to France through Mahogany, sugar cane, and other products. Although Haiti gained its independence, it left the island denuded of any soil. Soil erosion made it impossible to plant anything. Not only that, the loss of topsoil became a serious threat to the island. Deforestation became a huge problem for the island. And over the following 300 years, something had to be done.
