Soil erosion made it impossible to plant anything. Not only that, the loss of topsoil became a serious threat to the island. Deforestation became a huge problem for the island. And over the following 300 years, something had to be done.

The effects of the Mahogany choppings are felt in Haiti to this day. Even though the events occurred 300 years ago, the island needs reforestation. That's why local communities get together and look for a solution. In today's episode, we talked with Michael Anello, Executive Director at Haiti Reforestation Partnership.
The Haiti Reforestation Projects wants to reforest Haiti by planting trees. To this day, they've planted more than 15 million trees in the ground. They are a nonprofit organization that cares for the economic development of the island. The loss of Haiti's forests is a natural disaster. But thanks to the Haiti Reforestation Partnership, there are signs that tree cover is increasing.
Offsetting the Carbon Footprint
The reforestation project is offsetting the carbon footprint of the island. Not only that, but Haiti has a serious problem with carbon emissions. The island has no emission laws and anyone is free to burn their trash. What this does is it's killing the environment. The Haiti Reforestation Partnership is offsetting the carbon footprint of the island by running reforestation projects across the island.
They plant trees, provide resources, and education, and offer a helping hand in reforestation projects. The trees planted by the organization greatly aid the reforestation of Haiti.
