Many of us will finish college or university with excellent knowledge and expertise, and yet lacking the practical skills or know-how of how to apply these attributes in the corporate world. In this episode, we spoke with India Jonassaint and Jazmin Dekle from Year Up about their mission to help young adults reach their potential through career training, mentorship and guidance. 

Bridging the Opportunity Divide: Ensuring Prosperous Careers for All

It’s all in the name; Year Up’s mentorship program enrolls students for one year in order to give them the necessary skills for personal and educational development. The first six months engage the students in a learning phase where they partner with the local college and undertake specific classes. The following six months are focused on pairing them with an internship that is based within their chosen pathway or special interest. 

The end goal is for every student to gain a hired position within a desired career field, that perhaps they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to pursue otherwise. They complete their time with Year Up with tailored skills, advanced education and a feeling of empowerment to fulfil their career dreams and live a fuller life. 

Year Up work with young people from varying backgrounds, focusing especially on providing support for those who experience disadvantages due to their location or financial background. Year Up covers their tuition fees in order to remove certain barriers which would stop them from pursuing their dreams. This allows students to fully engage in their program, with less stress surrounding the strains that often shadow higher education.
