Albert Pujols is a renowned Dominican-American baseball player. In 2005, Albert and his wife Deidre launched the Pujols Family Foundation to support families affected by Down’s Syndrome in the USA and, separately, to help underprivileged Haitian migrants struggling to make ends meet in the Dominican Republic. As a father to a daughter with Down’s Syndrome and a migrant himself, these are issues that have affected Pujols directly. In this episode we talked with Todd Perry from the Pujols Family Foundation.
Each year, 6000 children are born with Down’s Syndrome in the USA. Most are unemployed and spend their waking lives watching TV or staring at a computer screen. Todd explains that The Pujols Family Foundation offers a multitude of programs which focus on socialization. One of these is their prom; the St. Louis prom is an opportunity for around 750 people with Down’s Syndrome to meet and make friends.
Pujols Family Foundation: Ending The Cycle Of Poverty
Many Haitian immigrants come to the Dominican Republic chasing the promise of better jobs and a better life. But they often find themselves exploited and dependent on their employer. The Pujols Family Foundation provides these Haitians with education, medical relief and tangible goods to help them break free from legalized slavery.
Albert Pujols: A True Los Angeles Angel
As a major league player, Albert Pujols has a stellar baseball career with the Los Angeles Angels. But in his "Message of Faith" seen in the foundation website, "baseball is not the chief ambition of my life. Becoming a great baseball player is important to me, but it is not my primary focus."
When he and his wife Deidre found out that their daughter Isabella was diagnosed with Down's Syndrome, they set out to create a foundation to help those who are in need. Today, the foundation Albert And Deidre set up has helped thousands of children and their families, and continues to do the good work that they do. Another of their efforts, Congracia, also helps families in the Dominican Republic.
