The number of people over the age of 65 is projected to double to 1.5 billion by 2050. Confronted by an aging population, it’s important that we understand how to live our senior years as healthily as possible. In this episode we talked with Nir Barzilai from the American Federation for Aging Research about a new drug that could help prevent a host of age-related diseases.
AFAR promotes healthy aging and fights chronic disease. Nir explains that the organization focuses on increasing our healthspan: the time in our lives in which we are generally in good health. The main ways to improve our healthspan are geroprotectors - frequent exercise and a healthy diet - and therapeutics - a promising series of drugs.
Trailblazing Biomedical Research
Nir warns that over-the-counter nutraceuticals are unregulated and often ineffective. AFAR focuses instead on the huge potential of pharmaceuticals like Metformin, which has been used for many years to treat diabetes but can also delay the onset of chronic disease. AFAR is leading an exciting series of trials into the drug’s effectiveness at combating age-related decline.
