Nearly everyone has known someone affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and the traumatic effects of forgetting the faces and names of loved ones. Researchers have yet to pinpoint the causes of the disease due to the multitude of reasons as to why individuals lose mental capacity. In this episode we spoke with Chuck Fuschillo about the care provided to patients suffering from the disease, and seminal differences between memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
“We always like to clarify that memory issues can be attributed to depression, alcoholism, thyroid issues, vitamin deficiency, sleep apnea, etc. All are treatable if not correctable. So we don't like to just throw out the word ‘Alzheimer’s’ all the time”
Often associated as the all-encompassing term for memory loss, Alzheimer’s is a very specific progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking and language skills. Dementia, on the other hand, is a term used to describe the symptoms of reduced cognitive and memory functions which can be caused by Alzheimer’s, as well as a myriad other factors. Chuck Fuschillo explains that knowledge is power, and the foundation spends valuable time and resources improving treatment, the quality of life of both caretakers and patients, in addition to funding research for an eventual cure.
