Many in the United States deem the current electoral college system flawed. The US presidential elections work based on a system called the electoral college. The electoral college system collects electoral votes nationwide. Each state receives a specific number of electoral votes. The presidential candidate who wins the most electoral votes becomes the President. But electoral votes don’t work on a one-vote-one-point system. Instead, a state can have a significantly lower number of voters and carry a similar weight to a state with a much higher number of voters.

National Popular Vote is dedicated to creating a popular vote for presidential elections to challenge the current electoral college system in the United States.

The electoral college system was deemed flawed during the 2016 Trump vs. Clinton Presidential election. In the 2016 race, Hillary won the popular vote, but Trump won more electoral college votes. With that, he became the 45th President of the United States. The need to fix this mistake is the reason why in today's episode, we talked with Eileen Reavey, National Grassrooter of National Popular Vote.

National Popular Vote is a nonprofit organization that wants to make a change for future presidential elections. They want to replace the electoral vote with a popular vote. The popular vote winner will be the President. This is their mission, and here is how they plan on carrying it out.

One Person, One Vote

With the introduction of the popular vote, the National Popular Vote believes that each person's vote will carry greater weight. Instead of the candidate with the most votes from each state getting the electoral votes, each person's vote will carry one point. The winner will be the candidate with the most points or votes.

National Popular Vote also says that the electoral college votes are why candidates spend most of their campaign resources in states with the biggest votes. These include California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Unfortunately, candidates often neglect states with few votes, such as Alaska, Delaware, North and South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming. They want to change that and fix the whole system.
