145 years ago, child abuse and neglect were widely tolerated. Children were not only hurt physically and emotionally, but were exploited as well. This mistreatment was generally overlooked, save for a few exceptional cases. No one even challenged this until 1875.
In this episode, we talked with Amy Pumo from the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the oldest institution institution advocating for child welfare — preventing child abuse and neglect, while educating families on how children should be treated.
Prevention through Awareness
Neglect and abuse of children are incredibly complex. Many parents and caregivers have personal issues that make it difficult to care for children properly, whether it is a mental illness, a past trauma or drug use. Intervention is often needed and taking these children away from these abusive situations and providing holistic care can sometimes mean life or death. Pumo explains that attention and care for children is extremely important in preventing child abuse and that this topic is a conversation that we need to keep having to help prevent it — something that NYSPCC has been doing for more than a century.
