Population Media Center Is Creating Entertainment Education To Help Raise A More Sustainable World

Population Media Center is a nonprofit organization that works with communities all around the world aspiring to social, cultural, and environmental health. Their work has touched the lives of 500 million people in more than 50 countries around the world. By creating entertainment education, Population Media Center addresses issues, such as sexual and reproductive health, family planning, gender equality, women's and girls' rights, gender-based violence, and various environmental challenges to inspire entire communities.
The nonprofit uses behavioral science to inspire the listener to change. Their programs include key innovations in the form of specially designed transitional characters. These characters act as role models. Through entertainment education, the listener learns about the consequences of making good and bad decisions. One of Population Media Center's programs in Nigeria addressed the complex issue of family planning. The program was a huge success, attracting 12.5 million listeners and empowering 1.1 million new users to give family planning a try.
Their message is based on extensive formative research and serves specific focus groups that suffer from local social norms. They also collaborate with other nonprofit organizations to addresses deeply entrenched beliefs unique to specific regions. By creating television and radio programs, the nonprofit organization tackles these beliefs and helps millions of people around the world live healthier lives.
