When we are faced with huge social, environmental and global challenges—such as climate change, equal rights and COVID-19—it is easy to fall into inaction due to the scale and severity of these issues. But we must remember that people, such as you and I, will always be at the center of transformative change. In this episode, we spoke with Meg Moloney from Points of Light about their mission to inspire, equip and mobilize people to take action within their own communities and beyond.
An Antidote to Apathy
Empathy is an essential quality for identifying the needs within society and allowing the strength of one community to extend past its own borders, in order to support others. Points of Light work with over five million volunteers and lists around 150 thousand activities a year for potential volunteers. Moloney explains how they help people to realise their potential by giving them options of how to become engaged and act upon their empathy for civic and social causes. By connecting volunteers with nonprofits and organisations across the globe, as well as collaborating with companies to offer pro bono services, Points of Light have created a substantial network of change-makers.

Great.com is an innovative charity project working to move money from the online casino industry towards initiatives focused on preventing climate change. So far, Great.com has generated donations of over $1.3 million. This is done by competing with casinos in Google search rankings for online gaming signups coming from search terms such as "online casino New Jersey" and "online casino bonus code". The profits this generates are then donated to causes working to stop global warming, rather than being reinvested into the casino industry.
