Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest Gives Hope, Love, and Home to Discarded and Captive Chimpanzees

The life of captive chimpanzees is hard. They are kept in sanctuaries throughout the world, but the word "sanctuary" isn't the correct term for some of the things we humans do to captive chimps. For example, many so-called sanctuaries breed chimps for entertainment, to be sold as pets, or even worse, for medical research that harms their wellbeing. That's why in today's episode, we talked with Diana Goodrich, Co-Director at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.
Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest is a nonprofit organization that cares for discarded chimpanzees. They are located in the Cascade mountains on a 110-acres of farm and forested land. The organization is on a mission to provide lifetime quality care for chimps and educate the public about their struggles in captivity. They care for a total of sixteen chimps and are a founding member of the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance.
Giving Second Chances
The organization welcomes discarded chimpanzees throughout the United States. In recent years, they welcomed nine chimpanzees from the Wildlife Waystation, providing care and giving a second chance at life to amazingly friendly chimps.
The organization's goal is to stop the use of chimpanzees for entertainment and harmful medical research. They also envision a world where every chimpanzee lives with their family in their natural habitat. Sadly, the task is difficult, so they instead welcome discarded chimpanzees that would otherwise struggle to adapt to their natural habitats due to lifetime captivity and old age.
