Keeping the lights on, the rooms warm and our machines whirring comes at a cost. A massive 40 percent of the energy the USA consumes goes towards keeping its buildings running. In this episode we talked with Kevin Carbonnier from New Buildings Institute about the importance of building zero-energy and carbon-neutral structures.
What Does Zero-Energy Mean?
Zero-energy buildings are energy-efficient homes and work places that consume only as much energy as they produce themselves from sources such as on-site or neighborhood solar energy.
New Buildings Institute works with local governments to help them implement energy efficient codes that new buildings should meet as well as standards for existing buildings. They also help minimize the carbon footprint of buildings to meet carbon emission targets and protect the environment.
Kevin explains that part of the challenge is developing guidance that is tailored towards specific building design problems, such as designing efficient buildings for a colder or warmer climate. Everything is planned with carbon and energy in mind, from the building materials themselves to the logistics of construction.
