There are numerous employment barriers for immigrant professionals and refugees in the United States. From stigma to exploitation, these are all issues that prevent these people from entering the workforce. Plenty of immigrants and refugees come with the education and skills to enter the workforce and be paid a decent wage. But the employment barriers prevent them from achieving that. In today’s episode, we talked with Rebecca Neuwirth from Upwardly Global.
Upwardly Global is a nonprofit organization that connects refugees and immigrant job seekers with employers. Over the years, they've placed more than 7,500 people in well-paying jobs and have contributed $350 million to the economy.
Eliminating Employment Barriers
The United States was built by immigrants. So it makes no sense to set barriers in place to prevent newcomers from living the American dream. Sadly, these barriers prevent inclusion and that negatively impacts immigrants and refugees. Upwardly Global wants to eliminate this type of mindset in the United States and shift it more towards inclusion, diversion, and acceptance of foreigners.
With the United States being in a workforce shortage, it makes sense for immigrants and refugees to fill up the shortage and contribute to the economy.
