Canadian Horse Defence Coalition is an organization that advocates against the consumption and export of horse meat.
In 2020, over 1600 horses were live-shipped to Japan from Canada for slaughter and human consumption. In addition, every year Canada slaughters between 20,000 and 30,000 horses domestically, with their meat shipped to Europe and Asia for human consumption.

Horses have been an integral part of our society for centuries. Not only do millions of people around the world still rely on horses for work, but many consider them as part of their family. Some slaughter and eat horses, even though they aren’t meant to be livestock. In this episode, we talked with Sinikka Crosland, president of Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) about ending equine slaughter and preventing the export of horse meat in Canada.
Compassion for our Equine Companions
Horses are very hardy and flighty animals. Due to their constitution, their slaughter is extremely painful and drawn out, and there is no humane way to slaughter them. Crosland even shares her reactions to videos she's seen of this inhumane slaughter from whistleblowers who want to help end this horrible act in Canada. She also argues that due to their nature, there truly is no humane way to have horses killed for human consumption, and that it is a practice that needs to end.
