East Harlem is a diverse place where cultures mix and create uniqueness. But there is a lot of racism in one of New York's most famous neighborhoods. This ultimately hurts East Harlem students. East Harlem children aren't interested in college due to these factors. In today's episode, we talked with Jeff Ginsburg, CEO of the East Harlem Tutorial Program.
They are a nonprofit organization with an after-school program that builds brilliant young scholars. They have been around since 1958 and hope to serve 25% of East Harlem children by 2025.
Giving East Harlem Children A Chance
Over the years, the East Harlem Tutorial Program has been successfully tutoring East Harlem children for college. Their scholars have a 98% acceptance rate and a 96% satisfaction rate. East Harlem scholars are 8 times more likely to graduate from college compared to the national average of students from low-income households.
What began as a public reading room is now an organization that offers tuition-free programs with a student-centered approach. The East Harlem Tutorial Program hopes to construct a state-of-the-art high school with STEM labs, gym and auditorium, art and music rooms, and make it open to the East Harlem community.
