Father Joe’s Villages Is Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness

San Diego has the fifth largest homeless population in the US. At any given night, there are around 8000 individuals that do not have homes. Worse still, is that half of that figure are unsheltered and are usually just roaming the streets looking for some place to settle down for the night. In this episode, we talk with Deacon Jim Vargas from Father Joe’s Villages about helping these individuals about finding shelter and eventually getting homes of their own and breaking free from the cycle of homelessness.
The Cycle of Homelessness Needs To Be Broken
A one-bedroom apartment in the west coast of the United States typically costs around 2000-2200 USD. This makes it extremely hard for homeless people to break free from the cycle of homelessness; even at the lowest rates for rent, it still costs an arm and a leg. With the mental health issues that may affect some who have become homeless, along with some situations, it’s extremely difficult for one to break free from the cycle of homelessness. Deacon Vargas explains that with just a little help and decent shelter; some of these individuals are able to rise against their plight. With even more assistance, some are able to find permanent housing, which is what Father Joe’s Villages’ end goal is.
