Despite being a third-world country, Tanzania has so much potential. Sadly, opportunities come hard in the country, and that's something we can do about. In today's episode, we talked with Dr. Steve Meyer from STEMM.
STEMM is a nonprofit organization founded in Sioux City that wants to create a bridge to Tanzania. STEMM stands for Siouxland Tanzania Educational Medical Ministries, and what this essentially means is they're a series of ministries that offers a wide variety of services to the people of Tanzania. One of their most important services is their orphanages.
STEMM helps several orphanages across Tanzania with financial, food, medical, and logistical support. Other services that STEMM offers to Tanzania come in the form of ministries. There's the spiritual ministry, medical ministry, education ministry, agriculture ministry, and community development.
Bridging Sioux City with Tanzania
Dr. Meyer says that they travel to Tanzania regularly. One of their highest priority is to help Tanzanian children graduate from high school and continue their education abroad. Their work has resulted in a nearly 100% graduation rate - a stark contrast from the 5% graduation rate in Tanzania 25 years ago.
STEMM students are some of the highest performers in the country. STEMM students rank in the top 10-20% of the country. Tanzanian students have the will to learn, they just need to be given an opportunity - says Dr. Meyer. Another important area is the medical ministry. Despite being a country with 40 million people, Tanzania has less than 100 general surgeons and 15 orthopedic surgeons. So one important way STEMM gets involved is through medical outreach by helping doctors perform life-changing orthopedic surgeries.
STEMM also helps with medicine supply and medical technology innovation. Their innovation unit gives doctors access to medical equipment necessary to treat the people of Tanzania.
