How Stories Can Shape Public Perception

The power of storytelling should never be underestimated. The stories that circulate within our societies are incredibly persuasive, often holding the key to people’s mindsets and emotions. Selma, Alabama, is considered the heart of the civil rights movement, and yet there still exists the hierarchy of human value: where one person is held above another within society simply due to the color of their skin. In this episode, we talked with Felecia Lucky from Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF) about the importance of dismantling these hierarchies and transforming the false narratives perpetuated since the times of slavery.

Shifting the Discourse and Creating Opportunities

So how do we begin to change the status quo and plant the seeds of systemic change? BBCF’s model works hand-in-hand with the community, working to create better educational opportunities through early learning, implementing restorative justice and school nonviolence circles, promoting reading and literacy proficiency and developing academic and leadership skills for students through scholarships and regional leadership camps. Outcome goals are higher graduation rates and decreased unemployment, working to create more opportunities and life choices for people of all backgrounds. This is achievable because everyone is giving and receiving, working towards transformation together. Lucky explains that by partnering with local media, they are also able to shift the narrative of discriminatory public discourse and help to change the hearts and minds of people in the community.
