Unlike talent and tenacity, which are allocated randomly at birth, opportunities await young people at differing and unequal rates. That is to say, the strands of systemic racism and classism run deep in society, and the education system is a prime example of this. Students from privileged backgrounds are far more likely to receive the support and guidance they need to enroll in college and achieve their qualifications in order to begin a prosperous career. In this episode, we spoke with Steve Colón from Bottom Line about their efforts to support students of color and lessen the privilege gap within education.
Increasing Social and Economic Mobility
Within this static system, college-ready students of color need allies and advocates to help them navigate the obstacles that the college process puts in their path to success.. Bottom Line’s trained professionals work on a deep personal level with their students, gaining insights of their aims and desires and helping them to make informed decisions about college and offer guidance and opportunities to strengthen their career readiness. Colón explains that this crucial support and guidance has led thousands of students towards success. Their students are far more likely to earn a bachelor's degree than their peers, with the majority of their students gaining employment within six months of completing their degrees. In many cases, their starting salaries are almost twice what their family income was upon starting the program.
