From fossil fuels to massive deforestation, governments and lobbying companies are standing hand in hand and wreaking havoc on the environment. While people try to protest and recommend policy changes with their local elected officials, they are not enough on their own to make a change. That's why in today's episode, we talked with Amy Gray, Senior Climate Finance Strategist at Stand Earth.
Stand Earth is a nonprofit organization on a mission to address various environmental issues, including climate change, deforestation, indigenous rights, and the impacts of the fossil fuel industry. They work towards creating new policies, and industry standards, and advocating for a just and equitable transition to a sustainable future.
A Future For All of Us
Stand Earth focuses on climate finance and aims to stop the financing of fossil fuel companies by banks, insurance companies, and institutional investors like pension funds. They believe that these financial institutions play a significant role in enabling companies to continue producing and burning fossil fuels, thereby driving up global greenhouse gas emissions.
Their approach involves research, corporate and citizen engagement campaigns through frontline communities, and collaborating with grassroots groups, organizations, and coalitions to divest pension funds from fossil fuels and challenge big banks to respect indigenous sovereignty and halt funding for fossil fuel infrastructure. Their ultimate goal is to stop these terrible practices and protect healthy forests to reduce global climate emissions.
In addition to climate finance, Stand Earth addresses other issues such as deforestation, ending financing for oil in the Amazon, restoring climate leadership, and advocating for safe cities. They emphasize the importance of intersectionality and partnerships, particularly with indigenous communities, recognizing their role as the original inhabitants of the land and involving them in decision-making processes.
